Are paid surveys real??

I just signed up to do a couple surveys that claim to pay money but now I am worried.Are surveys for real?? Can you really make money without being sent weird ads and being harassed by phone or sent junk mail? I am worried that these are not real. Does anyone out there know if they work and also if you can make money?? If so, which ones? If not,how can I make money??? Please let me know.
